As we approach the end of the school year, many of us will be making plans for the summer. If you’re like me, those plans will include much more time for reading. So I thought I would start making a list of my favorite books and share it with those who might be interested.
First up is John Owen.
The greatest of the Puritan authors is John Owen. He is also probably the most difficult of the Puritans to read, but don’t let that stop you from reading him. I have found myself going along reading Owen and then coming across a phrase or a sentence or a paragraph and having to stop and think about it for a few days, before I can go back to reading him.
Currently there are several different editions available from Volume 6 of John Owen’s Works. Volume 6 deals with sin and how to go about killing it. It is a totally different take than what you might find today in a typical “Christian” bookstore, or on “Christian” radio. So it’s worth taking a look at these just for that. Books like The Mortification of Sin, Overcoming Sin and Temptation, Triumph Over Temptation, and Temptation: Resisted and Repulsed, are modernized for today’s readers and well worth your time.
There are various other paperback editions of Owen’s works printed by the Banner of Truth, as well as the complete works, that are all well worth your time.
You can find these books at Cumberland Valley Bible Book Service (which I use a lot), Reformation Heritage Books, or Christian Book Distributors. Amazon also carries some, but not all, of these books.
